Conny Gwai Pastry Chef and Owner of Yours Truly Kaygee’s Confections

Tell us a bit about yourself and your background.

My name is Conny Gwai. I am from Pretoria in a township called Mamelodi and I am married with 3 kids and currently residing in Kathu. I studied for my national diploma in hospitality management at the Tshwane University of Technology. I have worked in the industry for over 5 years in all the hotel departments and spent most of my years in the Front desk department. I work full time as a business administrator and business mentor in the enterprise development sector where I am also an assessor and facilitator. Away from my day job, I am a pastry chef in Yours Truly Conny Gwai, a confectionery business I own in Kathu that trades as Yours Truly KayGee’s Confections.

At what stage in your life did you decide to get into the business?

I decided to get into business in 2020 March during the covid-19 lockdown.

What sets your business apart from other businesses in your industry?

We pride ourselves on our products from the ingredients as we bake our products from scratch. To the taste, quality, and appearance. We are passion-driven, innovative, and creative.

What has been your driving force as an entrepreneur?

PASSION! I have learned that without passion a lot of entrepreneurs lose the momentum of entrepreneurship. Being passionate about your work leads to so much growth and success.

How did you come up with the name for your company? How easy or difficult was it?

I had a name just before starting out the business and the difficult part about the name was the fact that there have been tons of businesses registered on that name and I was already referred to as that name. So the solution was to give it my identity by infusing my name and surname in it.

What kind of culture exists in your organization, and how did you establish it?

We are innovative, detail-oriented, and people-oriented. By constantly learning and observing the needs of specific products/ services within our community and bringing them to existence.

What does your business do? What products or services do you offer?

We specialise in customized confectionery baking.

How has being an entrepreneur affected your life?

Being an entrepreneur has taught me to be creative, innovative, be even more productive, and a multitasker.

Would you change anything in terms of your journey in business?

As much as still being new to the business industry, I am very happy with how far I have become and looking forward to more growth and being established.

How do you manage the balance of being an entrepreneur?

Planning way ahead of time has been my priority as an entrepreneur which helps me save a lot of time. As a full-time employee, a mother, a wife, and an entrepreneur I have limited time at hand, and spending it wisely without exhausting myself is essential to me because, at the end of the day, I need to deliver 100% outcomes in all aspects of my life.

What motivates you every day?

My family! As much as I spend most of my time mastering my craft as an entrepreneur, the very same time I sacrifice is the time I owe to spend with them and they are very supportive of every idea I put on the table.

What is your vision in business?

Striving to define uniqueness in our taste and serving our clients with love, kindness, humility, and quality products fuelled with passion.

What is your mission?

To provide the best quality, unique, and freshly baked confectionery products/ services.

What are your values in your business?

Honesty, Integrity, and passion.

How do you define success in business?

The small constant daily wins for me means I am directed towards success.

Do you believe that entrepreneurs are born or made and why?

I believe that entrepreneurs are made because I am one made entrepreneur. I never liked the idea of selling products or services in the past and today I am passionate about what I do.

What is your favorite thing you like about being an entrepreneur?

Being innovative and creative. Thinking of the impossibilities and bringing them into existence. Basically being the solution to people’s problems.

What has been your greatest achievement in business?

At this point, still new in the business industry and having success stories and FEEDBACK from my clients. Either constructive or great is leading me towards my greatest achievement in business.
